SACRED BURDENS: THE JOURNEY OF A WOMAN'S CROSS

SACRED BURDENS: THE JOURNEY OF A WOMAN'S CROSS, 2023.

Butterflies made of fabric with embroidered wings applied to a wooden frame.

Female beauty, often a paradox of empowerment and imprisonment, is a complex theme in a society fixated on appearance. Women are constantly bombarded with unattainable beauty standards, leading to a cycle of insecurity and objectification. This societal focus reduces women's value to their looks, overshadowing their achievements and abilities.

For the Women Pulling at the Threads of Social Discourse exhibition, I'm creating a 3D ceiling-hung piece. It features 18' dolls with butterfly wings, symbolizing the burdensome beauty standards women carry. Made of fabric with appliqués and embroidery, these figures are bound to a 30' x 40' frame, representing the metaphorical imprisonment of women in societal beauty norms. This artwork aims to challenge and redefine the narrative around women's worth beyond physical appearance.
